These spacers use steel ball seat inserts (As do some Mercedes wheels!) and Gil Racing's own threaded inserts in order to provide maximum clamping force. Your very hard steel wheel bolts are only in contact with the spacers steel inserts. This prevents the soft aluminum threads found on other spacers from being ripped or deformed if over tightened or over abused.   12 mm Ball This is the Mercedes style OE steel insert. These are used on some thin Mercedes aluminum wheel such as Bundts. This insert enables the mounting wheel bolt head to be placed lower in the spacer. It also allows the spacer to sustain higher compressive forces before the aluminum displaces. 12 mm X 1.5 This is Gil Racing's solution for bolting up a variety of different Mercedes wheels to a single spacer. Because different length mounting hardware can be found for Mercedes wheels, a spacer is needed with integral threads. Aluminum threads are simply not acceptable. Over torquing a steel bolt in an aluminum spacer will ruin the spacer and pose a very serious safety issue if not noticed.
